Slieve Coillte is the highest point on the Hook Peninsula at a height of 271m. Popular with hill-walkers, thousands climb the hill every year. On a good day, you can see the whole peninsula, including Hook Head Lighthouse. At the summit there’s a memorial stone marking the hill’s role in the 1798 Rising. There’s a circular walk around the summit too, so you can enjoy the panoramic views over six counties.
On the south side of the hill is the John F Kennedy Memorial Park, dedicated to the memory of the 35th US president. Stretching across 623 acres, this beautiful woodland park features over 500 different rhododendron and azaleas and an internationally important collection of over 4,500 different trees and shrubs, some of which are very rare. The ideal place for a reflective ramble, where walking trails meander among groves of eucalyptus, redwood, oak and magnolia.
